Hair Tips and Treatments
I hope you are enjoying the amazing sun that we have been having even though it's been super cold. We have all had our heaters on at home and in the car and therefore our hair has been feeling more parched and a bit dull and lifeless because of it. A quick and easy fix for this coming out of winter is to use a hair mask instead of your usual conditioner or add in a leave-in treatment. to your regime , these will both give your hair a bit more nourishment and get its bounce back.
Following on from my last post with some facts about hair loss.
Here are some more factors to consider if you are suffering from excessive shedding or hair loss.
Lifestyle, environment, stress, sleep, diet, nutrition, smoking, alcohol, UV rays and electromagnetic radiation, can all influence the health and condition of the hair and scalp;
Androgens, prolactin, cortisone and insulin resistance all influence hair loss. Hypothyroidism causes thin, dry, lacklustre, brittle hair by slowing down metabolism while hyperthyroidism causes hair loss from overactive consumptive metabolism.
Postpartum hair loss is due to sudden drop in oestrogen levels after childbirth.
Menopausal and peri menopausal hair loss is from low oestrogen which causes relative rise in the effects of progesterone and androgens. Stopping oral contraceptives can cause diffuse hair loss.
Use of bioidentical hormones and hormone-replacement therapy can lead to hair loss but they can also help with this so consult with your gp about the best way to tackle this for you.
When dealing with excessive hair loss, it's important to handle your hair gently to minimise further damage. Here are some recommended hair tools and tips:
Wide-Toothed Comb or Detangling Brush: Use a wide-toothed comb or a detangling brush with soft bristles to gently detangle your hair when it's wet. Avoid brushing vigorously when hair is dry as it can lead to breakage.
Soft Hair Towel or Microfiber Towel: Instead of rubbing your hair vigorously with a regular towel, which can cause friction and breakage, use a soft microfiber towel or a cotton t-shirt to gently blot excess water.
Scalp Massager: A scalp massager can help stimulate blood flow to the scalp, which can promote hair growth. Use it gently in circular motions when washing your hair.
Silk or Satin Pillowcase: Sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase can reduce friction and prevent hair breakage compared to cotton pillowcases.
Low-Heat Hair Dryer: if you use a hair dryer, opt for one with adjustable heat settings and use it on a low-heat or cool setting to prevent damage to your hair.
Hair Bands: Use hair bands that are gentle on your hair, such as scrunchies made of soft fabric or hair ties without metal clasps.
Avoid Excessive Heat Styling: Minimise the use of heat styling tools like flat irons, curling irons, and hot rollers, as excessive heat can weaken your hair and contribute to breakage.
By choosing gentle hair tools and handling your hair with care, you can help reduce further hair loss and promote healthier hair growth.
love as always,
Andrea.
